It was used from at least the Model "T" Ford up through the 1950's until Lead-based Cadmium took over temporarily, until that was replace in 63 with Zinc Phosphate of fasteners like the bolts used to hang the bumpers on Ford Mustangs.
Use for like-original look, fit, and function for the little wrenches for the tool kit used in the tool kit puch, and Fasteners for the Bumpers and Automotive Head Bolts. European made use of it too for Hardware.
